Website or app: what does your business actually need?

Illustration of planning and designing a digital project

You have an idea involving the internet, but you’re unsure whether it needs a website, a mobile app or business software. Start with what a person needs to accomplish. The technology can come later.

A website for information and enquiries

If you want to explain services, present products, publish articles or receive enquiries, a website is often a good starting point. People access it through a link, without installation.

A well-planned site can include a catalogue, forms or simple bookings. You do not automatically need a separate app just because most visitors use phones.

A web application for a specific task

A web application helps someone complete a task in a browser. Examples include booking systems, customer portals, order management and business dashboards.

If you repeatedly copy the same information between spreadsheets and messages, describe the entire process. Some steps may be combined in a simpler system. User roles, permissions and data handling need to be planned before development.

A mobile app for regular use

A mobile app can make sense when people return frequently and phone features are important. Consider installation, app store publication, updates and long-term support.

Ask why someone would install it and keep using it. A clear benefit matters more than a long feature list.

Start with the smallest useful solution

Write down the main problem, who experiences it and how they handle it now. Identify the few features the solution cannot work without. Save additional ideas for a later stage, once you have user feedback.

A good first step solves a concrete problem and leaves room to learn.
